Once‑In‑A‑Century Disaster Unfolds

Venezuela’s deadliest earthquakes in over a century have killed at least 164 people — and U.S. scientists warn the true death toll could reach into the tens of thousands.

Story Snapshot

  • Two back-to-back earthquakes — magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 — struck northern Venezuela on June 24, 2026, just 39 seconds apart.
  • Venezuela’s acting President Delcy Rodríguez confirmed at least 164 dead and 971 injured, but the full toll remains unclear.
  • The U.S. Geological Survey warned the disaster is likely widespread, with models showing a 44% chance the final death toll falls between 10,000 and 100,000.
  • President Trump said the U.S. is “ready, willing, and able” to help, while rescue crews continue searching collapsed buildings.

Two Massive Quakes Strike in Under a Minute

At about 6:04 p.m. local time on June 24, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck near San Felipe in Yaracuy state, roughly 100 miles west of Caracas. Less than a minute later, a stronger 7.5 quake hit the same region. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) called the pair a rare seismic “doublet.” These are the most powerful earthquakes to hit Venezuela since a 7.7-magnitude quake in 1900 — making this a once-in-a-century disaster.

The quakes were felt across multiple Venezuelan states. Buildings collapsed in Caracas, the country’s main international airport shut down, and tsunami alerts briefly went out for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands before being lifted. At least 20 aftershocks followed within hours. The USGS says there is a 40% chance of a magnitude 6.0 or larger aftershock within the next week.

Death Toll Climbs as Rescuers Search the Rubble

Early reports put the death toll at 32 killed and 700 injured. By early Thursday, acting President Rodríguez raised those numbers to at least 164 dead and 971 injured. Search and rescue teams are still working through collapsed structures in Caracas and surrounding areas. Communication outages in some cities are slowing independent verification of the full scope of casualties.

The USGS issued its highest-level disaster alert — a red alert — for this event, a designation it uses only once or twice a year worldwide. The agency’s Prompt Assessment of Global Earthquakes for Response system estimated a 44% probability the final death toll will land between 10,000 and 100,000, with a 30% chance it could exceed 100,000. These are probability models, not confirmed counts, but they signal the potential scale of the catastrophe is far larger than current official figures suggest.

Political Uncertainty Clouds the Full Picture

Venezuela’s government is already fragile. Rodríguez is serving as acting president following the capture of former leader Nicolás Maduro. That political instability raises real questions about whether official casualty figures are complete or accurate. Communication blackouts are making it harder for outside journalists and aid organizations to verify conditions on the ground. A major hotel in La Guaira state collapsed, and social media videos show widespread structural damage across the country.

Economic damage could be staggering. The USGS estimates a 39% probability that financial losses will fall between $10 billion and $100 billion — potentially equal to 20% of Venezuela’s entire annual economy. President Trump pledged U.S. support, and the offer matters. Venezuela’s socialist-wrecked infrastructure was already in poor shape before the quakes hit. Getting real help to real people will depend on whether the Rodríguez government accepts outside assistance and allows transparent access to affected areas.
