(UnitedHeadlines.com) -On July 21, Republican presidential nominee and former President Donald Trump stated that, if he wins reelection, he would declassify the investigation into his attempted assassination.
Trump made the comment while he and his vice presidential pick, Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance, discussed the July 13 attempted assassination on “Jesse Watters Primetime.”
Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, was killed after attempting to assassinate Trump not long after he took the stage at his July 13 rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Rally attendee Corey Comperatore, 50, was killed, and two other men at the rally, James Copenhaver, 74, and David Dutch, 57, were injured in the shooting.
Trump told host Jesse Watters, “There should be nothing to hide here.” He noted that some of what investigators have learned so far “are bad.” Trump said that many people screamed about “a man on the roof with a gun” even before Trump “walked onto the stage,” adding that he thought someone would have “done something about it.”
The U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle attempted to shift the blame, claiming local law enforcement was responsible for the outer perimeter and the Secret Service was responsible for the inner perimeter.
According to reports, Crooks used a drone throughout the day to scope out the area. Reports show local law enforcement spotted him about 30 minutes before the attack. Another officer reportedly climbed the ladder to the roof, spotting Crooks but heading back down the ladder when Crooks pointed the firearm toward the officer.
During a July 22 House Oversight Committee hearing, Cheatle admitted the assassination attempt was the “most significant operational failure” in the history of the Secret Service in “decades.” Cheatle could not say why no Secret Service agents were on the roof where Crooks was located, which was about 164 yards away from the stage. She had previously tried to claim agents were not posted on the roof due to the slope of the roof. She resigned on July 23.
