(UnitedHeadlines.com) – Former President Donald Trump was set to attended the July 19 funeral of Corey Comperatore, 50, the man killed during the assassination attempt of the former president.
Comperatore, a former fire chief of the Buffalo Township Volunteer Fire Company, died July 13 at the Butler, Pennsylvania, rally as he shielded his daughter and wife from the gunfire during the attempted assassination of Trump, who was shot in the ear. A husband and father, Comperatore was a project and tooling engineer and an Army reservist.
His funeral was held on July 19 at Cabot Church, where Comperatore was a longtime member. Following the funeral, a procession of nearly 500 fire trucks traveled from the church to the Buffalo Township Volunteer Fire Company.
On July 16, Comperatore’s wife, Helen, stated that Trump had called her to convey his condolences. She noted that Trump said “he would continue to call me in the days and weeks ahead.” She added that she had told the former president her husband “left this world a hero.”
The private funeral for Comperatore followed two public events memorializing and celebrating Comperatore’s life. On July 17, a vigil for him was held at a dirt racing track, Lernerville Speedway, followed by a public procession and visitation on July 18 at a banquet hall. Though Trump could not attend the July 18 visitation, he sent a note of condolence calling Comperatore a hero, displayed during the visitation.
During Trump’s July 18 speech accepting the Republican Party’s presidential nomination, Trump displayed Comperatore firefighting gear on the Republican National Convention stage. Trump then walked over to the gear and kissed the helmet, calling Comperatore “an unbelievable person.” He also held a moment of silence for “our friend, Corey,” who he said “lost his life selflessly.”
According to Trump, a GoFundMe campaign for Comperatore’s family and the two men injured in the assassination attempt, David Dutch, 57, and James Copenhaver, 74, has raised over $6 million.
