Trump Supports Staggs to Kick Out Romney

(UnitedHeadlines.com) – Former President Donald Trump is supporting Riverton, Utah, Mayor Trent Staggs in his bid to fill the Utah Senate seat currently held by Republican Sen. Mitt Romney.

Trump endorsed Staggs, one of 10 Republicans running for the seat, in a post on Truth Social before the Republican delegates met in Salt Lake City for the state convention. The winner of the state convention goes on to appear on the June 25 primary ballot. However, other candidates can still qualify for the ballot by gathering 28,000 certified signatures.

In the post, Trump called Staggs “100% MAGA,” adding that he is running to fill the seat held by Romney, who he called “a Total Loser.” He called Staggs, who has served as the mayor of Riverton for six years, a “Highly Successful Entrepreneur.” He added that Staggs “will be a GREAT Senator and never let you down!”

Utah’s largest police union, the Utah Fraternal Order of Police, endorsed Staggs, calling him “a longtime supporter of law enforcement and specifically the FOP.”

Trump’s endorsement was not the only one Staggs received. He also had the endorsement of Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville, Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz, business entrepreneur and former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, and Arizona Senate candidate Kari Lake.

The leading Republican in the race heading into the state convention, Staggs entered the race before Romney announced in September 2023 that he would not seek re-election. Staggs said he was running because he is “worried about the country” his children “will inherit if I sit on the sidelines.” He added that “we need more voices willing to push back” in the government.

A convention-only candidate, Staggs won the April 27 state convention with 69.7 percent of the vote. He will now face off in the state’s June 25 primary against candidates that gathered signatures, including Utah’s 3rd District congressman John Curtis, Moxie Pest Control CEO Jason Walton, and former state House Speaker Brad Wilson.
