Top Dem Says It’s Worth Investigating if House Members Drank in Hearing Room

(UnitedHeadlines.com) – Democratic Maryland Rep. Jamie Raskin says the rumors that non-members of the House Oversight and Accountability Committee were intoxicated during the out-of-control May 16 hearing are “worth investigating.”

According to Raskin, the top Democrat on the committee, he did not see anyone drinking but stated that it is worth following up on Democratic New Mexico Rep. Melanie Stansbury’s statement that she saw members who were not on the committee “drinking inside the hearing room.”

Stansbury was not alone in making the accusation, as California Rep. Robert Garcia also stated there was drinking before the chaos erupted in the hearing. He said they were talking and laughing and, “quite frankly, some folks were drinking,” adding that he was unsure if they were drinking in the room.

The hearing, held to consider holding Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress for refusing to release the audio tapes from special counsel Robert Hur’s interviews with President Joe Biden, started later than usual, at 8 p.m., due to some members attending the trial of former President Donald Trump.

It quickly erupted in chaos after Republican Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Democrat Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett began arguing about why the hearing was being held, with Greene stating that Crockett’s “fake eyelashes” were getting in her way. The comment caused a response from New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who called Greene’s comment “disgusting,” adding that it is “absolutely unacceptable” to attack another person’s physical appearance.

Despite a break, the argument continued, with Greene telling Ocasio-Cortez that would “never” apologize to Crockett for the comment. Crockett went on to say Greene has a “bleach blond, bad built, butch body.”

Following the argument, which lasted for about an hour, the panel voted to advance the contempt resolution against Garland.

Republicans and Democrats criticized the lawmakers for the scene, stating it was a good look for Congress.
