Star Podcaster Shot to Death in Police Standoff

(UnitedHeadlines.com) – On Dec. 3, Joseph Tyler Goodson, 32, featured on the podcast “S-Town,” was shot and killed during a standoff with police.

According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), the Alabama man was killed after he barricaded himself inside a home in the 500 block of Georgia Loop in Woodstock. Law enforcement officers from many different agencies responded to the incident. According to police, a standoff ensued. Officers shot and killed Goodson after he allegedly brandished a gun during the incident.

According to local news, Goodson apparently shared what was happening on Facebook just before his death. According to reports, he wrote, “Police bout to shoot me down in my own yard.” His Facebook account has been deleted.

In a statement from Woodstock Mayor Jeff Dodson, he said he knows “everyone wants answers and details” regarding the death of Goodson. Goodson was “well-known and loved by myself, his family and this community,” Dodson added. He asked that people remember Goodson was “much more than a character to the fans who loved him.”

The podcast “S-Town,” documents life, crime and corruption rumors in the small town of Woodstock, Alabama, from the perspective of clock repairman John B. McLemore. Woodstock is located between Birmingham and Tuscaloosa. In 2015, McLemore died by suicide at age 49 after drinking cyanide, two years before the podcast first aired. Goodson, a friend and employee of McLemore, appeared on the podcast as one of Woodstock’s residents and a mentee of McLemore’s.

After the podcast debuted in 2017, Goodson pleaded guilty to burglary and theft for taking items from McLemore’s property after McLemore had died. He received a suspended sentence, which included five years of probation.

“S-Town” is produced by “Serial” Productions, the producer of the podcast “This American Life.” In 2017, the podcast won the Peabody Award.

It remains unclear what prompted the initial call to police, and the shooting is under investigation by the ALEA and the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI).
