(UnitedHeadlines.com) – After President Joe Biden’s July 21 announcement that he was ending his 2024 reelection campaign, California Gov. Gavin Newsom endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris.
Newsom’s endorsement of Harris came just hours after Biden dropped out of the race with a post on Twitter. While Biden did not endorse Harris in his first statement, a subsequent post included an endorsement of Harris.
In his post on Twitter, Newsom called Harris “Tough. Fearless. Tenacious.” He claimed that Harris would be able to “guide our country in a healthier direction,” standing up to former President “Donald Trump’s dark vision.” He added that “with democracy at stake,” Harris could lead the country.
Newsom also praised Biden, claiming he “has been an extraordinary, history-making president, adding that he would be remembered, “as one of most impactful and selfless presidents.”
Many Democrats had called for Biden to withdraw from the race since his June 27 debate performance against Republican presidential nominee and former President Donald Trump. However, Newsom continued to support the president, stating that he “would never turn my back” on the president.
Newsom’s endorsement of Harris aligns with his September 2023 statement, when he said that if Biden decided not to run for re-election Harris should be his successor. Following the debate debacle, Newsom was again questioned about whether he would consider running if Biden dropped out, stating he would not run or challenge Harris if Biden decided to end his reelection campaign.
Newsom had been rumored to have considered a potential run for the White House if Biden decided not to seek reelection. The rumors were fueled by Newsom spending some of his time traveling the country to Michigan, New Hampshire, and Pennsylvania as a Biden surrogate.
While Harris has enough delegates pledged as of July 22 to be the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, it will not be official until August at the Democratic National Convention.
