Long Shipyard Stay Set for Bremerton

The work is set to begin August 1, 2026, and run through December 1, 2027. First-year funding for the job comes to $192.591 million, according to the budget entry. That stretch adds up to roughly 16 months with the carrier out of active service.
Puget Sound Naval Shipyard sits on Naval Base Kitsap in Bremerton. It holds the only dry dock on the West Coast big enough to handle a nuclear aircraft carrier. The yard is also building a new, larger dry dock designed to handle the Navy’s newer Ford-class carriers, with construction work overlapping the Lincoln’s stay.
Not the Carrier’s First Long Overhaul
Lincoln has spent extended stretches in Bremerton before. In 2001, the ship went through a six-month Planned Incremental Availability at the same shipyard. Then in 2006, it entered Dry Dock No. 6 for a scheduled Docked Planned Incremental Availability that stretched across roughly nine months and cost about $300 million at the time. A 2021 availability was completed by the shipyard’s San Diego detachment working alongside the crew.
Other Nimitz-class carriers have followed the same pattern. USS Carl Vinson spent 14 months in Dry Dock 6 for its own docking availability, and USS Nimitz has gone through a 15-month docking period following deployment. These long stays are built into how the Navy maintains its oldest nuclear carriers, not a sign of an unplanned breakdown.
Why Carrier Repairs Take So Long
A single aircraft carrier needs about 7.5 million total man-days of maintenance over its life, or close to 150,000 man-days every year, according to a RAND Corporation estimate. That workload explains why availabilities routinely stretch past a year. Nuclear propulsion systems, hull inspections, and major system upgrades all require specialized labor that only a handful of shipyards can provide.
Government Accountability Office auditors found that shipyard facility problems contributed to more than 1,300 lost operational days for aircraft carriers between fiscal years 2000 and 2016. Aging piers, limited dry dock space, and outdated equipment have squeezed the Navy’s four public shipyards for years, pushing planned repair windows longer than originally scheduled.
A Tight Squeeze for Carrier Availability
Lincoln’s extended repair period comes as the Navy already faces pressure on how many carriers it can keep ready at once. USS Ronald Reagan, also stationed at Bremerton, was on track to finish its own Drydocking Planned Incremental Availability by the end of August 2026 after undergoing similar shipyard work. With both carriers cycling through the same yard, the Navy’s carrier availability tracker shows several flattops tied up in maintenance, training, or work-up cycles at any given time.
