(UnitedHeadlines.com) – On June 28, soap opera star Doug Sheehan, 75, died at his Big Horn, Wyoming, home.
According to a statement released by Kane Funeral Home, his wife, Cate Abert, was by his side when he died. A cause of death has not been disclosed.
A native of Santa Monica, California, he was born on April 27, 1949. He began acting in the late 1970s, landing minor roles in the ABC series “Charlie’s Angels” and the CBS series “Kaz.” In 1979, Sheehan landed his role on the ABC soap opera “General Hospital,” where he played private detective Joe Kelly until 1982. He appeared in more than 200 episodes, earning a Daytime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Actor in a Supporting Role in a Daytime Drama Series for his performance.
In 1983, he landed a role as reporter Ben Gibson on “Knots Landing.” He appeared in more than 100 episodes of the show until Season 8, when his character, who was the second husband of Valene Ewing, left for South America and never returned.
In 1988, he starred as Brian Harper, a husband and father who opens a daycare center in his home, in the short-lived NBC series “Day By Day.”
In 1997, he replaced Michael Lerner as Mel Horowitz on ABC’s adaptation of Amy Heckerling’s “Clueless.” It moved to UPN for its third season, and the show was canceled in 1999.
He also played the father of Sabrina in “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” through 2003.
During his career, he had roles on the TV shows “Alice,” “Cheers,” “Columbo,” “Dear John,” “Diagnosis Murder,” the original “MacGyver,” “Passions,” and “What I Like About You.” He also had minor roles in the 1979 movie “10,” the movie “Cops n Roberts,” and the 1982 movie “Victor/Victoria.”
Outside of his acting career, Sheehan was a polo enthusiast, stating during a 1987 interview that he loved “the antique Rollses and the English boots.”
Fans reacted to the news on Twitter, calling it “very sad news.”
