Fourth Victim Found At Key Bridge Collapse Site During Recovery Efforts

(UnitedHeadlines.com) – On April 14, officials recovered the body of a fourth victim of the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse inside a missing construction vehicle in the Patapsco River in Baltimore, Maryland.

Crews located the missing construction vehicle as they continued removing the wreckage of the collapsed Key Bridge. At the request of the family, the victim has not been identified.

On March 26, the cargo ship, the Dali, crashed into the bridge, causing eight construction workers repairing potholes on the bridge to fall into the river. Two workers were rescued, the bodies of Dorlian Castillo Cabrera, 26, Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes, 35, and Maynor Yasir Suazo-Sandoval, 35, have been recovered, and two workers remain missing.

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott said, “Our hearts continue to break” for the families of the victims, adding that the “entire city remains with them.”

Cleanup of the wreckage continues with cranes and barges being used to take the wreckage to Sparrows Point, where welders cut the pieces of the bridge into smaller sizes for disposal, with every effort being made to recycle the steel.

Salvage crews hope to recover the bodies of the missing two workers as they continue to remove debris from the river, working toward opening a temporary channel, allowing more commercial traffic to resume through the Port of Baltimore. Officials hope to reopen the Port of Baltimore, which has been closed since the collapse, by the end of May.

According to a senior law enforcement official, a criminal investigation has been opened by the FBI, which will examine the events leading up to the ship leaving the port and whether the crew were aware of any possible mechanical problems that would make the cargo ship unsafe. Physical evidence and data from the ship from before, during, and after impact have been collected by FBI agents as part of their investigation.

On April 15, Scott also announced that Baltimore is taking steps legally “to hold wrongdoers responsible.”
