Biden Mistakenly Says He Spoke to Dead German Chancellor at First G7

(UnitedHeadlines.com) – President Joe Biden, 81, made his second gaffe in a matter of days on Feb. 7, stating he discussed the events of Jan. 6, 2021, with the late German Chancellor Helmut Kohl, who died in 2017.

Biden made the comment while talking with donors during the second of three campaign reception events he attended in New York. He was speaking to donors about conversations he had at the first Group of Seven (G7) meetings he attended since being elected president, where he discussed the events of Jan. 6 with other world leaders. The G7 meetings Biden referred to had been held in June 2021 in England, and in attendance were former German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron.

According to Biden’s story, Kohl asked Biden what he would say if he learned that 1,000 people attempting to prevent the next prime minister from taking office stormed the British Parliament. Kohl was the chancellor of Germany from 1982 to 1998.

The gaffe follows another one Biden made Feb. 4 while speaking in Las Vegas, Nevada. During the event, Biden stated he talked with the late French president François Mitterrand at the same G7 meeting. Mitterrand died in 1996. Biden retold the story, saying he sat with Mitterrand at the G7 meetings, telling him “America is back.” Biden then said, “And Mitterrand from Germany — I mean from France,” mixing up Mitterrand with Macron. Mitterrand served as the president of France for two terms between 1981 and 1995.

The two mistakes are some of the most recent slip-ups made by Biden that have people questioning his abilities as he seeks re-election in 2024. At 81, Biden is the oldest president in the history of the United States, and, if re-elected, he would be 86 at the end of his second term. Polling continues to show voters are concerned with his memory lapses. According to a January NBC poll that surveyed 1,000 registered voters, three quarters of all voters, including half of the Democrats surveyed, were concerned with Biden’s physical or mental health.
