(UnitedHeadlines.com) – On March 4, New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, 34, and her fiancé, Riley Roberts, were accosted by a group of pro-Palestinian protesters outside the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Brooklyn.
Video shows the protesters demanding Ocasio-Cortez refer to Israel’s bombing of Gaza as a “genocide.” Ocasio-Cortez tells the protesters that “this is not okay,” with the protesters continuing to say that not speaking out against a genocide that is happening is what is not okay. Ocasio-Cortez then yells, “You’re lying!”
The protesters continue following the couple down the escalator, with Roberts telling the protesters to stop as the group heads outside, continuing to follow Ocasio-Cortez down the sidewalk.
As a protester asks Ocasio-Cortez if she is afraid the comments would “go viral,” she goes on a tirade, angrily saying that the protesters are going to edit the video so that her comments are taken “out of context.” She added that she has “already said that it was,” referring to Israel’s actions.
Following the confrontation, some social media users resurfaced a Twitter post from December 2020 that Ocasio-Cortez posted, where she said protesting should “make people uncomfortable,” calling the old post ironic.
Since the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas that killed 1,200 people in Israel, Ocasio-Cortez has condemned Israel’s actions against the people in Gaza. While she condemned the attack by Hamas, she also said the U.S. should cut aid to Israel, saying they are committing “war crimes” and called for a ceasefire in the war.
However, during a January interview on “Meet the Press,” Ocasio-Cortez did not directly say that Israel’s military action is a genocide, sidestepping a question about whether the use of the term was going overboard.
During the interview, she said it was still being determined if the use of the word genocide was appropriate, adding that the discussion about the use of the word “demonstrates the mass inhumanity” the people of Gaza face.
