Blinken’s Testimony to House Foreign Affairs Committee
Secretary of State Antony Blinken addressed the House Foreign Affairs Committee, defending the Biden administration’s actions during the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. He attributed much of the chaos to a 2020 withdrawal deal made by former President Trump with the Taliban. Republican lawmakers criticized the administration for being unprepared and minimizing the Taliban threat. Blinken argued that President Biden’s decision to withdraw followed the agreement to prevent a renewed conflict.
The testimony further highlighted that all American and dual citizens have managed to leave Afghanistan if they chose to. Blinken denied ignoring prior warnings and stated the situation developed faster than expected. A government-appointed Afghanistan war commission is expected to release an independent review by 2026 to evaluate the withdrawal thoroughly.
Watch @RepGregoryMeeks say Blinken subpoena is clearly political, and maybe we should subpoena "Abdul", who Trump mentioned last night, to see why he gave in to the Taliban.

Ongoing Scrutiny and Financial Expenditure
Amid his testimony, Blinken faced harsh scrutiny regarding U.S. funds handed to the Taliban and the lack of oversight over the financial aid provided to Afghanistan. Republican Rep. Tim Burchett voiced strong concern over the $7 billion worth of military equipment left in Afghanistan, now possessed by the Taliban. Additionally, the committee questioned spending on non-essential programs, such as foreign aid programs perceived as ineffective.
“We anticipated that Kabul would remain in the hands of the Afghan government through the end of the year. This unfolded more quickly than we anticipated including in the intelligence community.” – Antony Blinken
The meeting left Blinken facing further admonition from GOP lawmakers who accused him of evading previous subpoenas. They motioned for a vote holding him in contempt, emphasizing Congress’s call for accountability and scrutiny in handling taxpayer money intended to support Afghanistan.
🚨 BREAKING 🚨 The full committee will convene a hearing entitled, “An Assessment of the State Department’s Withdrawal from Afghanistan by America’s Top Diplomat,” with @SecBlinken on Wednesday, December 11th at 10:00am ET/9:00am CT.

Backlash and Forward Steps
Throughout the proceedings, Blinken reiterated that learning from this experience remains vital while working to bolster the State Department’s crisis response capabilities. Blinken’s appearance followed concerns about U.S. funding in Afghanistan, now under Taliban leadership, and financial appropriations that prompted criticism from various quarters.
“This catastrophic event was the beginning of a failed foreign policy that lit the world on fire.” – McCaul
At this juncture, a comprehensive government-led review stands as the overarching framework for assessing the 20-year military involvement. It aims to provide further transparency and insight into U.S. strategies and financial dispositions in Afghanistan, as needed for the reconstruction of effective foreign policy measures.
