Senior House Democrat Urges Biden to Exit 2024 Race

(UnitedHeadlines.com) – The top Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee, Smith said that he thinks Biden “should step aside” during an interview with Jake Tapper on “The Lead.” He said it was “clear” Biden is “not the best person to carry the Democratic message.”

Biden’s “be quiet and fall in line” campaign strategy is not working as constituents are concerned, Smith stated.

While Smith added that he feels Vice President Kamala Harris “would be a much better, stronger candidate,” he noted that he does not feel Biden should resign before the end of his term.

On July 7, Smith and three other senior House Democrats had a phone call to discuss Biden withdrawing from the race. The call included California Rep. Mark Takano, a Veterans’ Affairs Committee; New York Rep. Joe Morelle, a member of the House Administration Committee; and New York Rep. Jerry Nadler, a member of the Judiciary Committee.

The comments bring the total number of Democrats publicly calling for Biden to drop out of the race to 12, with Minnesota Rep. Angie Craig among those who have called for Biden to end his reelection bid.

The calls for Biden to withdraw come after Biden’s debate performance on June 27 where he misspoke, made false claims, and froze, causing many to be concerned over his running for a second term.

However, despite the calls for him to withdraw, Bidem continues to state that he will remain in the race. In a letter to Democratic Party leaders, Biden wrote a letter on July 8, calling for the debate over his candidacy “to end.” During an interview on July 9, he stated that he remains the best candidate to win over former President Donald Trump and challenged other Democrats to compete against him at the Democratic National Convention in August.
