(UnitedHeadlines.com) – Two people were killed and 19 others injured after a shooting at a block party on the east side of Detroit, Michigan.
According to police, multiple people were shot at the block party at around 2:30 a.m. July 7. A 21-year-old woman and a 21-year-old man were killed. Those injured, six men and 15 women, were between 17 and 27 years old. One person remains in critical condition, while the other victims are expected to make a full recovery.
Authorities recovered nine guns, including one with a Glock switch that makes it an automatic weapon, and more than 100 shell casings from the scene.
Police noted that more than 300 people had attended the pre-planned block party, with details of the party posted to Instagram.
The shooting is the latest to occur in the Mohican Regent neighborhood.
Neighbor Sandra Turner Handy called the shooting “not normal,” adding that the residents “should not sit by and let it continue to happen.” She called on the residents “to fight against this type of violence.”
Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield called the shooting an “unspeakable tragedy” and said there needs to be “an all-hands-on-deck approach to ending” the violence.
On Twitter, Michigan Rep Rashida Tlaib said the crisis needs to be addressed with urgency,” stating, “We need to save lives now.”
On July 8, Police Chief James White and Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan held a press conference unveiling a “comprehensive new strategy” for managing block parties. As part of the new strategy, police will respond to incidents at block parties as “priority one” calls, receiving a faster response. The hosts of the block parties and the property owners would be prosecuted for incidents that occur during a block party.
Police have received more than 500 calls related to incidents that occurred at block parties since May. Six separate shootings that occurred at block parties over the Fourth of July weekend resulted in 27 victims, including three people who were killed.
