(UnitedHeadlines.com) – Democrats in down-ballot races in swing states are distancing themselves from President Joe Biden after his June 27 debate performance.
Many Democratic candidates for the House and Senate had hoped Biden would help attract voters for their races as the Democrats fight to retain control over the Senate and hope to flip control of the House. However, many candidates are now distancing themselves from Biden after he repeatedly made false claims, misspoke, and froze during that debate against former President Donald Trump.
Two House members who are seeking reelection, Washington Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez and Maine Rep. Jared Golden and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, have stated they have no confidence that Biden can win in November.
In an op-ed, Golden wrote that he was not surprised with Biden’s performance, stating the “outcome of this election has been clear to me for months.” He wrote that “Trump is going to win,” adding that he is “OK with that.” Although Trump won Maine’s 2nd Congressional District that Golden represents in 2020, Golden is predicted to win his race.
Democratic candidate Adam Frisch, who is running for the Colorado seat held by Rep. Lauren Boebert, was one of the first to call on Biden to drop out of the race, noting “the path ahead requires a new generation of leadership to take our country forward.”
Arizona Rep. Raúl Grijalva, who represents a safe district for Democrats, also called on Biden to withdraw from the race.
Some Democrats have not called on Biden to withdraw from the race but have called it a “terrible debate.” Democratic Minnesota Rep. Angie Craig said she was “still processing what happened.”
Despite calls for him to resign, on July 8, Biden wrote a letter to the Democratic Party leaders stating he would remain in the race. He called for the debate over his candidacy “to end” and for Democrats to unite behind him “to beat Donald Trump.”
