(UnitedHeadlines.com) – Former President Donald Trump’s May 11 Wildwood, New Jersey, rally speech contained gaffes and a bizarre reference to Hannibal Lecter.
During the rally, Trump, 77, referred to the fictional character Hannibal Lecter, the serial killer in “The Silence of the Lambs,” as “a wonderful man.” He discussed how in the movie, Hannibal Lecter, known for eating his victims, says he is “about to have a friend for dinner” as a doctor walks by. Trump used the bizarre reference to Hannibal Lecter as a segue to illegal immigration, stating that people are entering the “country that we don’t want in our country.” This is not the first time Trump has referenced the character. In January, at a rally in New Hampshire, Trump also compared illegal immigrants to Hannibal Lecter, saying, “Hannibal Lecter is coming.”
In another gaffe, Trump appeared to have confused the self-governing island of Taiwan and Beijing, stating that “talking about Beijing,” China has planes and “ships circling.” China has said it wants Taiwan to reunify with mainland China.
During his speech, Trump also made a reference to former President Jimmy Carter, referring to him as “Jimmy Connors.”
Trump told the more than 80,000 people estimated to be in attendance at the rally about eating a “very good” hot dog, before segueing into a discussion he had about food with Frank Sinatra and Luciano Pavarotti. He stated that Sinatra told him to “never eat before you perform, and Trump responded that he told Sinatra that he is “not performing, I’m a politician.” He added that Pavarotti “ate all the time.” Sinatra died in 1998, well before Trump entered politics.
Trump’s gaffes and bizarre comments come as voters worry about the age of Trump and President Joe Biden, 81, the oldest two candidates to run for president. Both candidates have been criticized for mistakes made while speaking out on the campaign trail.
