(UnitedHeadlines.com) – While delivering the eulogy on March 30 for her husband, New York City police officer Jonathan Diller, Stephanie Diller, 29, blasted New York City officials for allowing crime to continue to rise in the city.
Detective Jonathan Diller, 31, was killed on March 25 after Guy Rivera, who had 21 prior arrests, opened fire on him and his partner, shooting him in the stomach during a traffic stop in Far Rockaway, Queens. A second suspect who was allegedly behind the wheel of the car, Lindy Jones, also had many arrests. Diller and his partner had been approaching the car because it was parked illegally at a bus stop.
During her eulogy in front of the more than 10,000 people gathered at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Massapequa, New York, his wife asked how many more officers and families “must make the ultimate sacrifice” before officials take action to protect police officers. She thanked people for their support after her husband’s death, saying that while he is now known as a hero to the rest of the world, he was always “a hero to Ryan and me.” She also recalled memories with her husband while holding their son, Ryan, 1.
Stephanie Diller was not the one to speak out during the funeral demanding changes. Detectives Endowment Association president Paul DiGiacomo said, “the failures” of city council members and legislators “brought us to the tragic moment.” He said they have created a “lawless society” because of their “irresponsible bail reform laws, which emboldens criminals.
Outside the funeral, Retired NYPD Sgt. Brian Foley said lawmakers who support bail reform should talk to him after they “walk a beat.”
New York City Mayor Eric Adams vowed the city would do more to ensure “violent career criminals are held accountable for their crimes.”
Former President Donald Trump, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, former NYPD Commissioners Bernard Kerik, Dermot Shea, and Keechant Sewell, and Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa attended the funeral.
