Trump and Biden May Avoid Debates?

(UnitedHeadlines.com) – As former President Donald Trump clinches the Republican presidential nomination, uncertainty is growing over whether any debates will be held between him and President Joe Biden before the November general election.

The two candidates last debated during the 2020 election cycle, when some viewed the debates as chaotic.

In a March 6 post on Truth Social, Trump called out Biden, stating he would debate Biden “anytime, anywhere, anyplace.” He added that the “corrupt” Democratic National Committee or the Commission on Presidential Debates, the DNC’s “subsidiary,” can run the debates.

Since 1988, the commission has conducted every debate. However, during the 2020 election cycle, the Republican National Committee and Trump accused the commission of being biased against Trump, and in 2022, the RNC voted unanimously to withdraw from the commission, objecting to its control over the process.

In response to Trump’s post, Biden stated that debating the former president will depend on Trump’s “behavior.” Biden campaign communications director Michael Tyler added that Trump’s call for a debate is because Trump is “thirsty for attention.”

Vice President Kamala Harris also weighed in on the issue, saying, “We’ll get to that at some point.”

Following Biden’s noncommittal response, Trump again posted on March 12, saying for the “good of our now failing Nation,” a debate must be “immediately” held.

This is not the first time during this election cycle that Trump has stated he wanted to debate Biden. In December, during a radio interview with Hugh Hewitt, Trump suggested 10 debates between the two. In February, he stated he would debate Biden as many times as necessary, adding that the two candidates have an “obligation” to have a debate.

According to the co-chair of the commission, Frank Fahrenkopf, the commission set three debates for September and October, but it is too early to say if those will actually happen.

If the two candidates do not debate before the November election, it would mark the first time in 50 years general election candidates have not debated.
