(UnitedHeadlines.com) – Martine Moïse, the widow of Haiti’s former President Jovenel Moïse, has been indicted as part of the investigation into the 2021 assassination of her late husband.
On July 7, 2021, the late President Moïse was killed in his Port-au-Prince bedroom after two dozen armed men broke into his home. His wife, Martine Moïse, was injured in the incident. The security detail assigned to the late Haitian president did not intervene to protect him or his wife.
According to Judge Walther Wesser Voltaire’s 122-page document that calls for the arrest of the 51 people charged, the former prime minister Claude Joseph and Moïse conspired to kill her late husband, seeking to replace him with herself as Haiti’s president.
Voltaire’s order states there is “serious and sufficient evidence” against the 51 people charged with crimes ranging from criminal association to assassination.
The law firm representing Moïse, PBY&A, insists she is innocent, adding, “She has no motivation for this attack.” The statement from the law firm also called her indictment “an embarrassment,” adding that it “calls into question” the current Haitian government’s legitimacy.
In a statement, Joseph said the order was the “weaponizing” of the Haitian justice system by the current Prime Minister, Ariel Henry. He also denied any involvement in the assassination plot and has repeatedly asked for international assistance in the investigation of Moïse’s assassination since he was prime minister.
Forty-four people, including 20 Colombians, have been arrested by Haitian authorities in connection with the assassination. Charges have also been brought by prosecutors in the United States against 11 men who were allegedly involved in the assassination, according to the U.S. State Department. Six of the 11 have pleaded guilty to a plot to have Colombian mercenaries kidnap the late former president, a plot that was changed into a murder plot. According to U.S. prosecutors, the Colombian mercenaries wanted to replace him with Christian Emmanuel Sanon, a Haitian-American pastor.
