(UnitedHeadlines.com) – Former YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki’s son was found unresponsive Feb. 13 in a dorm room on the Clark Kerr Campus at the University of California, Berkeley.
Berkeley Fire Department emergency responders pronounced her son, Marco Troper, 19, dead at the scene, according to university officials. The university’s senior director of strategic communications, Janet Gilmore, stated there were no signs of foul play, adding that his cause of death will be determined by the Alameda County coroner’s office, which is investigating Troper’s death.
In a Facebook post, Troper’s grandmother, Esther Wojcicki, wrote that her grandson’s death has left the family “devastated beyond comprehension.” She said her grandson, a freshman at UC Berkeley, was “the most kind, loving, smart, fun and beautiful human being.” Troper had just started his second semester at the school and was a math major, according to his grandmother, who added that he “was truly loving it.” She wrote that Troper had a “strong community of friends,” and would share stories with the family when he was home from college.
According to his grandmother, it is believed Troper ingested an unknown drug, adding that the family is waiting for results from a toxicology report, which could take up to 30 days to be completed.
Troper’s mother, Susan Wojcicki, is from a well-known family. In 1998, when she worked as a marketing manager at Intel, Wojcicki rented her garage to Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the founders of Google. For many years, she worked for Google, stepping down from her role as the CEO of YouTube in 2023. While her sister, Anne Wojcicki, was married to Brin and is the co-founder and CEO of 23andMe. His grandfather, Stanley Wojcicki, who died in 2023, was chairman of Stanford’s physics department. His grandmother, Esther Wojcicki mentored Apple co-founder Steve Jobs’ daughter, Lisa Brennan-Jobs, and wrote the book, “How to Raise Successful People,” in 2019.
