(UnitedHeadlines.com) – On Feb. 4, former Acting U.S. Solicitor General Neal Katyal stated he was getting impatient waiting for the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals three-judge panel to rule regarding former President Donald Trump’s immunity claim about the federal case related to the 2020 election.
During an interview on MSNBC’s “Inside with Jen Psaki,” Katyal said he is “officially now at the freakout stage. Katyal, the solicitor general during the Obama administration, added that he thinks voters have a right to know before the 2024 election if “a candidate for office is a felon and an insurrectionist.” He added he was concerned because he feels this is an “easy case” where Trump does not have “absolute immunity.”
Former federal prosecutor Andrew Weissmann, who was also being interviewed on the show, agreed with Katyal’s statements, adding that there “really is no reason” for a delay.
Psaki called it concerning that Katyal and Weissmann were “freaking out,” adding they are both “people who don’t freak out.”
The case, related to the 2020 presidential election and the events of Jan. 6, 2021, was expected to start in March. However, the expected start date has been pushed back while an appeals court considers Trump’s claims of immunity. The panel heard Trump’s case in early January, where Trump argued he has immunity for acts committed while he was president and therefore, he cannot be prosecuted.
The case was suspended Feb. 2 by the U.S. District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan due to the wait for the appeals court decision. If Trump loses the appeal, he could appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. Therefore, it remains unclear if the case will be heard before the 2024 presidential election, with Trump being the likely Republican nominee.
Katyal called the delay and the trial’s potential start date pushing closer to the November election due to Trump’s appeals “a real problem.”
