(UnitedHeadlines.com) – At the Feb. 4 Grammy Awards, rapper Killer Mike, 48, whose real name is Michael Render, was arrested after getting into a physical altercation with a security guard.
Render was arrested for knocking down a security guard outside the stadium after the security guard did not move out of his way fast enough, according to a report from TMZ. He was charged with misdemeanor battery.
According to the report from TMZ, a video shows security personnel chasing Render “outside in the windy rain, attempting to stop him. The video does not show the altercation, but Render appears “determined to get by them.”
A Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson said Render was “detained and handcuffed” following the incident, adding that he was released after he was booked on the charges of misdemeanor battery.
On Twitter, The Hollywood Reporter journalist Chris Gardner wrote about the incident, stating that Render had “been taken away in handcuffs” after winning three Grammy Awards. In the post, Gardner said someone yelled, “Free Mike” as he walked by.
For the first time in more than 20 years, Render won a Grammy Award, taking home the award for Best Rap Album for his album “Michael” and the awards for Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance for the song “Scientists and Engineers.” During his first acceptance speech, he commented about being too old to wrap, stating it doesn’t matter “if you’re 78” and “rapping about how many gals you got in the nursing home.” He mentioned age again during his second acceptance speech.
The last time Render won a Grammy Award was in 2003, when he took home the award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for the song “The Whole World.”
In 2019, Render, who is known for speaking out about social justice issues, was the host of a documentary series on Netflix, “Trigger Warning with Killer Mike,” that examined issues that impact the black community.
