(UnitedHeadlines.com) – A new comment by former President Donald Trump ahead of the Iowa caucus is causing controversy.
As weather conditions were predicted to be “life-threatening,” Trump joked to a packed house at an Indianola rally that it was worth it to caucus for him “even if you vote and then pass away.” He added, “You can’t sit home,” even if you are sick. He said that no matter what, his supporters needed to show up at their caucus sites. He said the weather could work to his advantage because his supporters “are more committed than anybody else,” adding that the size of the crowd at the rally indicated that “the storm has had zero effect.”
In his final push before the caucus, North Dakota governor and former presidential candidate Doug Burgum, WWE star Kane, Iowa wrestling coach Dan Gable, and British politician Nigel Farage voiced their support for Trump.
Due to snow and wind chill temperatures predicted to drop as low as -40 degrees, Trump canceled three out of four in-person Jan. 14 events in Iowa. Per the National Weather Service, it was the coldest day in the history of Iowa.
Iowa’s caucuses require in-person attendance, and Trump’s comments led to a conversation about voter dedication versus personal safety.
Going into the caucus, Trump held a sizable lead over his opponents, and his victory reflected the predicted landslide. He won the Iowa caucus by claiming 50 percent of the vote, which is the biggest win in caucus history, leaving his fellow candidates, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley far behind. Following his victory, he recognized and thanked his family, including Melania Trump’s mother, Amalija Knavs, who died just a few days before the caucus. He stated she is “looking down and she’s so proud of us.” He added that he thinks now is the time for “everybody, our country, to come together.”
