(UnitedHeadlines.com) – On Nov. 27, the host of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” Stephen Colbert, announced he was recovering from surgery for a ruptured appendix.
While Colbert recovers, the show, which airs on CBS, was canceled for a week.
In a post on social media, Colbert stated that his show would be canceled for the week. He wrote that while people might think the show was canceled this week because of a “turkey overdose” or “gravy boat capsizing,” it was because he was recovering from surgery. He added a joke that from now on, his pancreas would handle all emails sent to his appendix.
In the post on Threads, Colbert added that he was “grateful” for his doctors. He also thanked his wife, Evie McGee-Colbert, and his kids for “putting up” with him.
An appendix that has ruptured or burst requires immediate surgery to remove the organ. The condition spreads infection throughout the abdomen, which can be life-threatening.
While no new show was scheduled for Nov. 27, Colbert did have a full schedule for the rest of the week. On Nov. 28, Colbert was set to have Jennifer Garner, guitarist John Scofield, and director Baz Luhrmann on his show. Also on deck are Jon Batiste and Patrick Stewart on Nov. 29, and Kelsey Grammer and Barbra Streisand on Nov. 30.
According to a CBS spokesperson, reruns of the show were scheduled to air in place of the live shows, including an episode featuring an appearance by Rachel Maddow. A rerun of the show with a performance by Grammy-nominated artist Gracie Abrams was scheduled to air on Nov. 27 before the announcement.
This is the second medical issue to cause the show to be canceled this year. In October, the show was canceled for a week when Colbert was recovering from COVID, and it was also off the air summer due to the writer’s guild strike.
Colbert has hosted the show since 2015, joining it after he left “The Colbert Report” on Comedy Central which ran from 2005 to 2014.
