Dancing With the Stars Derek Hough Has Breakthrough COVID -- What Does That Mean?

(UnitedHeadlines.com) – As the pandemic progresses and larger percentages of the population become vaccinated, it seems as though increasing numbers of “breakthrough” infections are making headlines. But what does it mean to have a breakthrough case of COVID-19?

Derek Hough, a dancer and judge on the hit show “Dancing With the Stars,” recently found out that he has COVID-19. The professional dancer is a breakthrough case, meaning he was fully vaccinated before becoming infected with the coronavirus. Hough asserts that he feels strong despite contracting the virus, but he would need to reschedule some of his upcoming events.

Breakthrough cases aren’t usually as serious as they may sound, and they don’t necessarily prove immunizations don’t work. The coronavirus vaccines can help prevent people from getting sick, but they’re not a sure-fire way of avoiding the virus.

At least according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), instead of providing full immunity, these vaccines help keep people from developing severe symptoms. Because they aren’t a 100% defense against the virus that causes COVID-19, the CDC expects breakthrough cases.

The CDC also warns that people with breakthrough cases can still spread the virus. As the pandemic drives on, more and more breakthrough cases are likely to pop up despite increasing vaccination rates.
